A Spotsylvania County native who serves on the University of Mary Washington board of visitors will join the National Education Association's exec-utive commit-tee in Sept-ember.
Princess Moss, 47, was recently elected to a three-year term at an NEA conference in Washington, with nearly 10,000 educators in attendance. It's the first time a Virginian has been voted onto the nine-member committee in about 25 years, Moss said.
"We are like the ambassadors for the NEA," said Moss, who now lives in Henrico County. "We go out to the different states and work with state leaders and members to help make NEA real to them."
She's finishing up a term on the 3.2 million-member organization's board of directors. Len Paolillo, a sociology professor at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, also was elected to the committee.
Moss was a music teacher in Louisa County before taking a leave of absence in 2004 to become president of the Virginia Education Association. Her term ends July 31.
She said her accomplishments as state president include increasing membership and promoting an "issue-driven, party-blind" agenda.
"Virginia has received a lot of positive attention during my tenure as president," she said.
The NEA also is evolving, Moss said. The organization is looking to play a larger role in reforming education and hopes to identify ways to keep younger teachers in the profession.
"I think America has been waiting for that," Moss said. "We have to take ownership of our profession instead of letting outside forces do it for us."

If you can't spell "Career" then you need to look for a new profession. You obviously harbor some deep seated resentment towards your fellow educators. Perhaps you should try some thing else that doesn't require much learning.

and not a member of the communist VEA or SEA,,,I can safely say that over 70% of my colleagues are not members, They are nothing but "tools" of the superintendent that he wields when they after elected officals for over the top funding. They think they represent th opinions of the teachers but they all are a bunch on politically naive do-gooders who believe they are making a difference.
