SUSPECTS LEARN SILENCE GOLDEN
Curse words land three suspects thieves in jail
Date published: 8/7/2008

BY KEITH EPPS

A few choice words led to multiple charges against three Delaware residents late Monday.

Stafford Sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said the suspects' troubles began when one of them cursed at a cashier in the Wal-Mart in Washington Square in southern Stafford.

The clerk had questioned a check the man was trying to pass and he became upset, Kennedy said.

Deputy Jim Fouts located the suspects at a nearby Sheetz station. He questioned two men about the Wal-Mart incident and got conflicting stories about why they were in the area.

One man told Fouts that they were here to visit a sick friend, but the man didn't know the friend's name or where he lived.

Fouts began making arrests after receiving a fictitious license from one suspect and learning that phony checks had been passed at Sheetz and Wal-Mart.

A search of the suspects' van turned up numerous fraudulent checks, along with items purchased with some of those checks.

The checks had various names on them, Kennedy said, none of which belonged to the suspects.

Dernard Turner, 28, Carolyn Wall and Hassie Wall, 35, were all charged with multiple offenses, including check fraud, conspiracy, shoplifting and obstruction of justice.

They were placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Three other people in the van were not charged.
