Thelma S. France

Thelma Scates France, 86, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, after a long illness.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Kermit France.

She was a wonderful cook and seamstress. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will truly be missed. She was a member of Newland Church of Christ.

She was born Jan. 23, 1922, to Joseph Daniel and Nellie Ester Scates in Ethel. As a child, she attended Menokin Church with her siblings, Violet Hall, Pearl Boyle, Myrtle France, Elsie Edmonds, Hazel Pierson, J.D. Scates and Leon Scates.

Survivors include five children and their spouses, K. Clifford and Jean France of Fredericksburg, Lois and Gary Allensworth of Montross, Bonnie and Steve Kreigh of Richmond, Vt., Nathan and Beth France of Warsaw and Beverly and Scott Jones of Montross; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Stacy Allensworth Minor.

Visitation will be held at Welch Funeral Home, Montross, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8.

A funeral will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at Newland Church of Christ.
