A Spotsylvania County man was indicted this week on eight molestation charges including rape and sodomy of a teenaged girl.
James Edmond Curtis, 67, was charged with abusing a 15-year-old girl, who came to police to report repeated rapes, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Spotsylvania Circuit Court.
The affidavit states that the sexual abuse had been happening for several years. It further states that the girl kept a diary and recounted some of the assaults in the diary.
Recently, the girl underwent a forensic examination at the hospital and came to police about the abuse.
One of the items the search warrant was issued to obtain is photos of Curtis' body, along with a DNA swab.
Curtis was indicted Monday on three counts of rape, one count of indecent liberties, two counts of aggravated sexual battery and two counts of sodomy.
Online court records show that one of Curtis' rape charges is a second offense, and the affidavit states that he was convicted in 1985 of raping a 13-year-old girl.
Curtis is not listed, however, on Virginia's sex offender registry.
According to the indictment list from the Spotsylvania Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, Curtis is represented by public defender Martha Norton and is currently incarcerated.
He is scheduled for arraignment Sept. 5.

you need to learn compassion. how dare you try to belittle someone else who was sexually abused. Iam a SURVIVOR of incestual rape myself. I cope with it and go about my life as well. But if you think it is easy and we just "forget" it happened you need a reality check. It affects every aspect of our lives. The way we treat and relate to others is a big part of that. Reach out to someone and tell them how you were able to overcome your experience. Don't try to rape them all over again by being so condemning

Talisman, I agree that the system is broken but until someone comes up with a better one, I don't mind the pleas. To many kids get re-victimized going through the trial. As it stands right now, it is a no win situation.
