Man gets himself in trouble for no apparent reason

Date published: 8/22/2008

BY KEITH EPPS

A Spotsylvania man was arrested late Wednesday following a bizarre incident that apparently began when he tried to hide from a police officer who wasn't looking for him.

According to Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe, the officer was on routine patrol in the 1000 block of Heritage Park about 10:40 p.m. when he saw a man knocking out a screen window and preparing to jump from a second-story window. He then ducked back into the residence.

The officer checked with a woman who lives in the apartment and learned that the man he'd seen was not one of the seven people who were supposed to be in the home at the time, including three sleeping children.

The adults got the children out of the home, leaving the suspect inside by himself. He was later taken into custody without incident.

The residents knew the suspect, but did not know he was in the home and had not given him permission to be there, Bledsoe said.

The suspect told police that he'd gone into the home to avoid the officer who was patrolling the area.

But Bledsoe said the suspect had no outstanding warrants and was not being looked for by the officer.

"It appears he was trying not to be noticed by someone who wasn't looking for him to begin with," Bledsoe said.

Khalil Salahuddin, 19, was charged with unlawful entry, trespassing, vandalism and three counts of child endangerment. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.

Probably would have commented but not like that. I agree.

exactly my point (posted by projectlemonade , Aug. 22, 2008 7:41 am)
Life... that was what I was trying to point out. What the man's name is hardly important. What is important is that the man is a criminal.Criminals come in all colors and from all socioeconomic backgrounds. I was merely pointing out that MrZorro's comment was extremely rude, given that the man's legal status wasn't the point of the article at all. If his name had been an American sounding name, MrZorro would have never felt the need to make a comment.

Thanks Mr Epps (posted by jameyboat , Aug. 22, 2008 7:23 am)
That was a good line, very true.

ProjectL, I don't care where he's from (posted by lifeisbeautiful , Aug. 22, 2008 7:12 am)
or what his name is but no one hides from law enforcement unless something is wrong. He was attempting to jump from a second story. What? He couldn't find the stairs? There's more to his story no matter what his name may be.

illegal alien? (posted by projectlemonade , Aug. 22, 2008 6:52 am)
MrZorro, your comment is rude and unwarranted. Just because the kid's name isn't Smith or Jones he's illegal to you? People like you are the reason we can't just live our lives peacefully. And I don't know where you think he's from, but is first name is African and his last is a name more commonly associated with Muslims. Wait! That's more reason for you to hate him, right?

What do you think?
