From First To Last shapes up after loss of lead singer and place on Capitol Records

When reviewing a familiar band, one automatically tries to judge the music based on older tracks. But to be blunt, From First to Last's fans must let go of the band's former albums in order to fully appreciate its recent self-titled release.

FFTL has gone through almost a complete metamorphosis over the past year. In 2007, lead singer Sonny Moore left the band. Instead of replacing him, guitarist Matt Good returned to vocals. (Good sang on the band's 2003 "Aesthetic" EP.)

Adding insult to injury, FFTL was later dropped from Capitol Records, which almost caused the breakup of the band. However, it was soon picked up by Suretone Records and began working vigorously on this new album.

The tracks on the record are memorable and well-made rock songs. What is most noteworthy, though, is that the band now incorporates slower songs, as well. These are also lighter than their usual sound.

Throughout the CD are astonishing guitar riffs and, certainly, some screaming. But what is really a pleasant surprise on these tracks is Derek Bloom's first-class skill with drums, which can't be ignored in the song "A Perfect Mess."

With FFTL's new sound, it's only a matter of time before the band attracts a wider fan base. Its music has become a bit more relatable and fuller-sounding. They may have gone through more drama than most bands--but they have used it to excel and form into a much more ear-dazzling band.
