Coaches forgo honors in USC loss

September 3, 2008 12:15 am

CHARLOTTESVILLE--

Usually after every game, the University of Virginia coaching staff awards a player of the week for offense, defense and special teams.

That wasn't the case following the Cavaliers' 52-7 season-opening shellacking at the hands of Southern California on Saturday.

Cavaliers head coach Al Groh said he and his staff didn't see fit for anyone to be honored.

"There's no coach of the week. There's no player of the week. There's the bum of the week," Groh said. "And I'm leading the club."

Virginia (0-1) will try to get back on track on Saturday when they host Richmond (1-0) at 3:45 p.m. The game has been designated is "Retro Day" at Scott Stadium. The Cavaliers' 1989 ACC championship team will be honored and tickets are $16, reflective of the 1984-93 era. Tickets are still available.
