Maine to have surgery today

FROM STAFF REPORTS

John Maine is scheduled to have surgery today to remove a bone spur from his right shoulder that prematurely ended his season with the New York Mets.

The Stafford County native didn't pitch after Aug. 23 because of a calcium buildup in his shoulder. He will have the buildup removed by Dr. David Altchek, the Mets' team medical director, and expects to be fully healed by December, when he begins his off-season workouts.

Maine, 27, was 10-8 with a 4.18 ERA in 25 starts for the Mets, who lost to Florida Sunday and finished one game behind Milwaukee in the National League wild-card race.

Maine spent two stints on the disabled list. He was activated for the final few days of the regular season, but manager Jerry Manuel did not use him in a game for fear of aggravating the injury.
