Colonial Forge's Daniel Ruggiero assured himself a spot in the Northwest Region tournament when he shot a 79 to win the Commonwealth District championship last week.

Likewise regular-season champion Stafford and tournament champion Albemarle have advanced to the region.

But five other local golfers have also secured a spot in the Oct. 14 region tournament at Forest Greens in Triangle: Daniel Puig (Riverbend), Jake Bruny (Brooke Point), Matt Dye (Mountain View), Jim Frederick (Riverbend) and Jason Monroe (Colonial Forge).

Albemarle shot a 341 to win the team tournament title, followed by Colonial Forge (345), Stafford (358), Riverbend (358), Brooke Point (360), Mountain View (371), Massaponax (384) and North Stafford (385).

CREDIT JM SENIORS

James Monroe didn't have the best player at the Battlefield District tournament Monday, but they did field the best team.

The Jackets followed up their regular-season championship with a tournament title. Though only one JM player broke 90, the Jackets were the only team with four golfers under 100.

Much of the credit, according to JM coach James Yager, goes to seniors Trevor Carr (93) and Daniel Burch (team-best 86).

"Those two seniors, they really came through for us," Yeager said.

The Jackets will play in the Region I tournament next week at Pendleton Golf Club.
