Buford Talmadge "Dude" Walters, 77, of Colonial Beach, formerly of Woodbridge, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at home with his family.
Mr. Walters was born in Concord, N.C., in 1931. He spent time in the Navy during the Korean War and was employed by the Naval Gun Factory and Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. Before retiring, he worked at the Night Vision Lab at Fort Belvoir. He was a proud member of several Northern Virginia Masonic lodges and the Scottish Rite. He was made a 33rd-degree Mason in August 2007. He was past master of Occoquan 310 in 1975 and Fort Hunt Daytime Lodge in 1997.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Diane Dunlap Walters; and a daughter, Michele Jackson and her husband, Ray Jackson, of Stafford County. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Viola Dunlap of Stephens City; and his nephews, Richard Walters of North Carolina and Jerry Walters of Chesapeake.
He had been a cancer patient for 1 years and received hospice care for mesothelioma. He loved being with people and singing. He held patents for many inventions.
A funeral will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, 11089 James Madison Parkway, King George.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverside Tappahannock Hospice or the Masons at the Scottish Rite Temple, Alexandria.
