Sarah Trimble provided the game-winning goal with 20 minutes remaining in the second half to propel the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Washington & Lee yesterday in Lexington.
Chelsea Brown gave the Eagles the game's first lead when she scored off an Emma Jones assist. After the Genrals scored four minutes later to tie the score, Trimble scored the game winner one minute later on another Jones assist.
The Eagles were outshot, 15-7, and W&L edged UMW in penalty corners, 6-5. Chrissy Bowdren had seven saves for the UMW.
The Eagles (6-4) will visit Hood College on Thursday in Capital Athletic Conference game at 4 p.m.
Saturday's results
CROSS COUNTRY
Frank DeVar (25:41, 21st place) and Hayley Sullivan (22:34, 18th place) paced the men's and women's cross country teams raced at the George Mason Invitational. As the lone Division III school in the race, the Eagle men placed 13th among 16 teams, while the women placed 12th.
UMW will run in the Gettysburg College Invitational on Oct 18 at 11 p.m.
