The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division is getting another key Navy research and development lab.

Construction began this week on a $25 million building to house the Dahlgren Research Development and Acquisition and Test and Evaluation Consolidation Facility.

It will be used to certify combat systems on Navy aircraft carriers and amphibious ships.

Stacia Courtney, spokeswoman for NSWCDD, said the new lab will be linked to other key Navy research labs. NSWCDD is the largest of six tenant commands at the Naval Support Facility Dahlgren.

The associated research labs include the Integrated Warfare Systems Lab at Dahlgren, which focuses on Aegis cruisers and destroyers, and the Wallops Island Surface Combat System Center on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

The testing will incorporate modeling and simulation, along with portions of of real combat systems, Courtney said.

Capt. Sheila Patterson, NSWCDD commander, said the project "demonstrates our commitment to provide leading-edge technology to our war fighters" while improving the quality and affordability of ship testing.

The 58,800-square-foot building is scheduled to open in June 2010. The two-story facility will include offices, labs and an anechoic chamber. That is used for testing audio equipment and other sensitive components requiring a complete absence of reflected sounds.

The Dahlgren base is getting the laboratory as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission action.

The work currently being done at Navy test sites in San Diego, Calif., and Charleston, S.C., will be moved to the King George County site.

About 130 people will work in the new lab, Courtney said. Some will be transferring from those two locations. How many will be moving has not yet been decided.

The lab will become the Navy's lead technical center for testing ship combat systems, and provide combat and warfare system engineering.
