Shirley T. Swain
Dr. Shirley Towey Swain, 86, of Locust Grove passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, at her residence. She was the wife of Dr. Garrett M. Swain Sr. for 63 years. She was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Jersey City, N.J., a daughter of the late Catherine and Robert Towey. She was a pediatrician with the D.C. Health Department for 28 years. She moved to Lake of the Woods in 1987 and volunteered with Hospice. Shirley enjoyed cross-country skiing, sailing and traveling. Along with her husband, she is survived by five children; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with a rosary service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Mark Mullaney officiating. Burial will follow in St. Michael Cemetery in Ridge, Md., at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Maryknoll Sisters, c/o Web office, Box 307, Maryknoll, N.Y. 10545, or mklsisters .org.
