Rudy C. Campbell

Rudy C. "C.C. Roja" Campbell passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at University of Virginia Medical Center with family and close friends at his side.

A Virginia native, his parents left Covington when he was 2 years old for California. After high school, he enlisted for four years Navy duty. When he was discharged, he spent three years at San Diego State College. His studies laid the basis for the career he followed in municipal government. He worked in the county administrator's office in Spotsylvania County and for the cities of Fredericksburg and Culpeper. He was the first town manager of West Point, Va.

Rudy never met a stranger and was loved and respected by all, young and old. He was something of a dilettante when it came to hobbies. He was a painter and a sculptor, working in oils and clay and wood. He was a writer of short stories and wrote and published two books of poetry.

He enjoyed outdoor sports, including fishing, sailing and golf. He also was an avid golfer. At the age of 71, he designed and built his own par-3 golf green in his backyard. He enjoyed many leisure games with his "special golf buddies," Virginia, Jeff, Jim and Matt.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Brenda Sullivan Campbell; four daughters, Jami, Shelly, Alicia and Roxanne; one son, Jeff C. and his adopted son, Jeff H.; five grandchildren, Doremey, Christian, Mary Ann, J.C. and Valerie; his mother, Ida Matthews; his sister, Dora Ann Whorley; and his brothers, Elmo Campbell and Ray Matthews. He also leaves his special four-legged friend, Max.

In keeping with Rudy's wishes, he was cremated. Chaplin Darren Miller conducted a private service for the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Orange Rescue Squad, Box 446, Orange, Va. 22960.

"One last round of golf for Rudy!"
