UMW plans: Diversity equals discrimination

UMW plans: Diversity equals discrimination

Beware, Virginia taxpayers. More of your money is about to be spent educating the children of people who do not pay taxes in Virginia ["UMW president promises to increase campus diversity," Nov. 18].

Some Virginia families will be discriminated against as their children are displaced and prevented from attending UMW in the name of diversity.

Diversity is a euphemism for discrimination, excusing the university's practice of racial discrimination in the admission process.

Now the UMW president wants to expand that process to exclude more Virginia children who are not of the favored minority, all in the name of diversity.

We will now have a full-time person on the university payroll whose job will be to further obfuscate the process and make it appear that race is not at issue.

Race or ethnicity should never be a consideration in the student admission process, but we know it is when heads are counted and statistics quoted on the basis of race and touted as diversity.

Does no one dare to admit the emperor has no clothes just because it is not politically correct to do so?

Racism is alive and prospering in our universities, beginning with their admission policies.

In the taxpayer-supported educational system we have, it is only proper that our children not be penalized or put at a disadvantage in order to satisfy someone's notion of diversity.

If we are to pay for it, our children must come first, regardless of race or ethnicity.

We have no obligation to educate the children of the world or from outside Virginia, wherever they might be from or for whatever reason.

The End Result (posted by RivaPops , Dec. 7, 2008 11:19 am)
Not only is there a total waste of Taxpayers' Monies, it is also amounting to a total waste of Students' time. For what is coming out of the Front Door of Our colleges today and being Politically Correct as well, Our Future is Doomed with Utter Ignorance and Narrowed Views, educationally and socially. Look at those guiding these young minds, either instructors that have never even taken the subject they are attempting to present or professors that cannot make it in the Real World!

OBC , what college students (posted by Ron_C , Dec. 6, 2008 7:47 pm)
applying for admission have been around for "hundreds" of years? Obviously none, so why do you feel that what happened hundreds of years ago should be relevent to their acceptance or rejection? To give one applicant a preferance over another based on their race or gender is discrimatory. The decisions should be made based on the better student without regard to race, gender or religion.

I think you are thinking of the Rich and Not necessarily white. I know even with my good grades I could not have gone, My family is not rich. That Shoe has always been on the same Rich foot be it white black brown or yellow...... The collage made this a Race Issue.don't make it worse by adding ignorance . Any Time One race is Favored over another for What ever reason It's Still racism , For some reason people think if it is against whites,it's can't be racism. Wrong is Wrong no matter what.....

hmmmmm (posted by theobc , Dec. 5, 2008 7:39 pm)
wow! for hundreds of years, this "discrimination" went in the opposite direction. minorities could not get into a university because of color, despite grades or money. whites could go to any university, usually despite having bad grades or because of who their parents knew or how much they could afford to pay to make it happen. now, minorities are being offered an opportunity to also get a good education and now after hundreds of years and this widespread practice is now so horrible - on the other foot.

More Race-Baiting, (posted by UsefulIdiot , Dec. 5, 2008 6:54 pm)
Diversity could mean many things, economic, geographical, etc. But leave it to the previous commentators (and the letter writer) to construe it as some uppity black getting in before their own lily white offspring. It just drives them crazy. And it never occurs to them that there are plenty of other colleges and universities in Virginia (and elsewhere) where their children can attend .
