UMW plans: Diversity equals discrimination

Beware, Virginia taxpayers. More of your money is about to be spent educating the children of people who do not pay taxes in Virginia ["UMW president promises to increase campus diversity," Nov. 18].

Some Virginia families will be discriminated against as their children are displaced and prevented from attending UMW in the name of diversity.

Diversity is a euphemism for discrimination, excusing the university's practice of racial discrimination in the admission process.

Now the UMW president wants to expand that process to exclude more Virginia children who are not of the favored minority, all in the name of diversity.

We will now have a full-time person on the university payroll whose job will be to further obfuscate the process and make it appear that race is not at issue.

Race or ethnicity should never be a consideration in the student admission process, but we know it is when heads are counted and statistics quoted on the basis of race and touted as diversity.

Does no one dare to admit the emperor has no clothes just because it is not politically correct to do so?

Racism is alive and prospering in our universities, beginning with their admission policies.

In the taxpayer-supported educational system we have, it is only proper that our children not be penalized or put at a disadvantage in order to satisfy someone's notion of diversity.

If we are to pay for it, our children must come first, regardless of race or ethnicity.

We have no obligation to educate the children of the world or from outside Virginia, wherever they might be from or for whatever reason.
