Boy, 12, charged with speeding, possessing stolen weapons

A 12-year-old boy will be extradited to North Carolina this week following charges that he was caught speeding in a stolen car in Spotsylvania County.

Two stolen hand guns were also found in the Jeep the boy was driving Friday when he was stopped going 70 mph hour in a 55 mph zone on State Route 3, according to a release by 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office.

The boy, of Burlington N.C., was charged in Spotsylvania with unauthorized use of a vehicle, two counts of possession of stolen handguns and was given a traffic summons for speeding.

Lt. Eddie Peck of the Sheriff's Office said yesterday that if local and North Carolina authorities can come to an extradition agreement on specific charges, the charges in Spotsylvania may be dropped.

He said it was unclear from whom the guns and Jeep were stolen.

Because the boy's charges are not of a violent nature, Peck said he would not be tried as an adult. In Virginia, you also have to be at least 14 years old for charges to be certified to circuit court.

Scott said after the incident, the boy's parents and authorities in North Carolina were contacted, and the boy had been reported either missing or endangered and possibly suicidal.

He had his first court appearance yesterday in juvenile and domestic relations court, and is being held at Rappahannock Juvenile Detention Center until his extradition, Scott said.
