Smoke detectors save family from house fire

Family of six loses home in Sunday morning fire

Date published: 1/12/2009

By DAN TELVOCK

A family of six credited smoke detectors that firefighters recently installed in their home for saving them from a fire Sunday morning.

Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management Spokesman Phil Sullivan said the fire call came at 5:08 a.m.

Two adults and four children were in the home at 3129 Partlow Road. The Red Cross is assisting them with living arrangements.

“The whole house was gutted and destroyed,” Sullivan said. “The only thing they could get out of their house was some clothing.”

The Spotsylvania County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management Department recently started a program where firefighters visit homes and conduct free smoke detector tests. Firefighters visited the Partlow Road home recently and installed smoke detectors.

“That’s what woke them,” he said. “They said without them, they really weren’t sure what would have happened.”

Sullivan said the fire started near the fireplace and was accidental.

Some fire departments still have smoke detectors available and batteries. If you are interested in having a firefighter conduct a safety check at your home, call 540/507-7900.
