Book benefits station
Fawn Lake group publishes book about its history and gives proceeds to local fire station
Date published: 2/10/2009

By CATHY DYSON

The Fawn Lake community continues to support its local fire station by delving deep into its past.

Three months ago, the Fawn Lake 24/7 Group released a book called, "Fawn Lake Links to History," and sold all 300 copies.

Proceeds from the book, as well as a bake sale and other community events, raised more than $4,000 for the Wilderness station of the Chancellor Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

The station is on Orange Plank Road, a few doors down from the gated community.

Fire officials used the money to buy life jackets, helmets, ropes and bags to go with the inflatable boat the Fawn Lake group helped purchase in 2003, said Sheryl Bennett.

She coordinates Fawn Lake's 24/7 Group, as well as the Spotsylvania Coalition for 24/7 Fire and Emergency Services.

"All these things directly impact the career and volunteer [firefighters] who serve at Station 7, and that's our primary focus," Bennett said. "It's something that other communities could do to help their stations, especially with the economic situation in our county."

The 50-page book tells the history of the land in and around Fawn Lake, from the railroad and gold-mining days of the 1800s, to 1990, when the first home was built in the development.

The book also gives a history of the Civil War soldiers and officers for whom Fawn Lake streets are named.

Gen. Robert E. Lee gets the most ink, with detailed descriptions about his stature, career as a young Army officer and his life after the war.

There also are descriptions of Union and Confederate leaders whose names are found on street signs, from "Baldy Ewell Way" to "General Wadsworth Drive."

The book was written by Don Bowers, a retired engineer who researched local history. Photographs of each street were provided by Paul McClain. Bennett coordinated the book's production.

All three live in Fawn Lake.

NTS Development Co. of Virginia underwrote the cost of printing so all proceeds could go to the fire station.

Those who worked on the book hope current and future residents will appreciate the history that surrounds Fawn Lake, located between the battlefields of Chancellorsville and Wilderness.

"When you walk these grounds today," according to the book's preface, "you can walk in the footsteps of those who made their mark on history and provided Fawn Lake with its legacy."

"Fawn Lake Links to History" is the second book published by the Spotsylvania County community. In 2003, the group produced "Fawn Lake Cooks!" which mixed recipes and historical information with photos of landscapes and local wildlife.

Both were overwhelming successes, said Sheryl Bennett, who helped coordinate publications.

Fawn Lake will continue to assist the Wilderness station of the Chancellor Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department with its financial needs. "We may work on another fundraising idea, but probably not another book," Bennett said.

Other Fawn Lakes groups have helped Wilderness, Station 7 of the Chancellor Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.

The Garden Club landscaped the station.

The Kayak Club donated GPS systems for ambulances.

Meals to 7 volunteers provide lunches and dinners for first responders. Residents of Lake Wilderness also participate.
