This VRE rider is not exactly a 'fat cat'

Not everyone who works up in Northern Virginia or Washington makes a huge salary ["Spotsy will help only 'fat cats' with VRE," Feb. 5].

Yes, I choose to work up in Alexandria and I don't expect any free rides, but to call me a "fat cat elite" is ridiculous.

I certainly don't get my VRE ticket for free. In fact taking the VRE is not cheap, nor is it convenient.

It's much easier for me to jump in my car and head on up I-95, but I wanted to do my part to have fewer cars crowding the highway.

I don't make a lot of money, but it's certainly a heck of a lot more than what I would get if I worked locally, even subtracting the cost of transportation.

I am a single parent with only my income, trying to provide a home for my sons and put food on the table, and each month it's a struggle.

I certainly would rather work in town. In fact, I did try for a while, but I was unable to make ends meet, and we do not lead an extravagant lifestyle.

Don't you think that if I were making a huge salary up north, I'd be driving up Interstate 95 in an Escalade or Lexus, not caring about how much gas I was burning and not bothering with the train?

Oh, and by the way, each day on the train, we "fat cats" from Spotsylvania County spend our commuting time comparing our furs and diamonds and looking down our noses at the little people.
