STAVE OFF INJURIES BY LISTENING TO YOUR BODY, BEING FLEXIBLE
Exercise slogans to sweat by

Date published: 2/15/2009

'No pain, no gain' is an exercise myth. Here are some better slogans to sweat by:

Listen to your body. No, not the small voice whispering, "must have chocolate" or the urge to loaf on the couch instead of head to the gym. When it comes to pain, though, if you sense something's not right, slow down and see if you feel better. If not, give yourself a day off. If you still feel pain, check with a doctor.

Mix it up. Love running? Try another type of exercise on your off days, and don't underestimate the power of some strength training to help you make the most of your running potential. Doing the same exercise day after day is a recipe for injury. Try a variety of activities and aim to challenge all your major muscle groups.

Have a life. An exercise routine is good for you, but the routine shouldn't rule your life. Be flexible, especially if you're recuperating from an illness or going through a stressful patch.

When in doubt, seek help. It's never a bad idea to get advice from a qualified fitness professional. If you have pain that lasts more than a day, consider talking with your doctor.
