Slave tour in city scheduled Sunday

Jervis Hairston of Fredericksburg, whose family was the subject of a book about slavery, will lead a "Freedom Trolley Tour" through the city on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Hairston will provide information about free and enslaved blacks who lived and worked in the area during the Civil War. The tour will include sites linked to slavery such as "Freedom Alley," a path used by free blacks who feared being stopped without their papers.

The tour departs from the Fredericksburg Visitor Center at 706 Caroline St. and is a Germanna Black History Month Workforce and Community Education class.

Cost is $15 and the tour is limited to 32 people.

To register, call 540/891-3012. Register before close of business on Friday.
