All of Spotsylvania will benefit from VRE

All of Spotsylvania will benefit from VRE

This is regarding Alfred M. King's letter ["Spotsy will help only 'fat cats' with VRE," Feb. 5].

Mr. King just doesn't get it. It is not an "us vs. them" mentality of native-borns and come-heres.

All Spotsylvanians will benefit by the county joining VRE. That 2 percent gas tax is not going to break anyone's piggy bank.

Both Stafford and Fredericksburg support VRE, and gas is lower in those localities. Think about all the tourists who come off the I-95 interchange to fuel up. That's lost revenue to Spotsylvania County.

By applying that 2 percent gas tax to fund VRE, Spotsylvania will see a return to the county rather than lose it to the state. So give it up.

Joining VRE is the fair and sensible thing for Spotsylvania to do.

Richard N. Stranton

Spotsylvania

Again another "miss the" point made... (posted by dr428 , Feb. 22, 2009 10:01 pm)    0 likes
The VRE is a white elephant that is looking to suck in money from more jurisdictions to keep the thing afloat. Yep, taxpayer funding and gas taxes for a precious few to enjoy. VRE does not support the masses. Why penalize the gas-buyers of Spotsy for being smart enough to stay away from this failure of a business model? Stay strong BOS. This VRE thing STINKS!

This letter to the editor makes no sense at all (posted by JoetheAmerican , Feb. 22, 2009 11:16 am)    0 likes
First of all everyone would have to be the tax. But less than 1% of Spotsy residents, those who ride VRE would benefit. The tax does not go to Spotsy. It goes to the PRTC to pay for Spotsy joining. VRE riders should pay for their own rides. VRE is about folks who chose to live in Spotsy to buy a big house at a low price and who chose to commute to DC to a well paying job. VRE is not about us vs them. It is about people who made a choice and people like Stranton who want you to pay for their ride.

Mass transit is like hybrid vehicles (posted by jaeshuan , Feb. 22, 2009 9:46 am)    0 likes
everyone supports them in hopes that somebody other than themselves will use them. we all love our gas powered cars and thats a fact.

I couldn't agree more (posted by winwood , Feb. 22, 2009 9:05 am)    0 likes
a dollar spent for mass transit goes alot further than a dollar spent on roads. It would be nice if the spotsylvania supervisors had the backbone to do the right thing and pass VRE legislation. This country is never going to be energy independent (from our enemies in the middle east).
