Giggetts picks up slack for Cougars

Visiting York was determined to keep its attention on Courtland's high scoring Josh Hairston last night.

But like many other teams this season, the Falcons found out the hard way that the Cougars have another decent post player in senior Lamar Giggetts.

With York double-teaming Hairston for much of the night, Giggetts feasted inside, scoring 24 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking five shots as Courtland waltzed to an 83-39 victory in a Region I, Division 4 quarterfinal contest.

Earlier, the top-seeded Courtland girls staged a fourth-quarter rally to win their quarterfinal game with Tabb, 60-50.

Both teams will be in action tomorrow in a doubleheader. The girls meet Lafayette at 6 p.m. and the boys face Smithfield at 7:30.

Giggetts performance in the second quarter helped spark Courtland (22-2) to a commanding lead over York after both teams struggled with their shooting early. The Cougars made just seven-of-19 shots in the first period and the Falcons connected on just three-of-12.

But Giggetts, Hariston and guard Luke Sellers ignited a 23-point outburst in the second period and the Cougars just kept adding to their margin. Hariston finished with 21 points, Sellers 15 and Avery Green nine. Don Pierce led the Falcons with 14.

"It was just a matter of time for us," Courtland coach J.T. Nino said. "We were attacking their zone but the shots weren't falling. Once we got relaxed, things changed."
