Clothesline bill left hanging Date published: 2/26/2009
RICHMOND --The House of Delegates yesterday killed a bill regarding "wind energy drying devices."Sounds fancy--until you realize that a "wind energy drying device" is, essentially, a clothesline. Some homeowners associations ban clotheslines, and the bill would have said they couldn't ban them outright. It had already passed the Senate, but the House had other ideas. First, delegates amended the bill to make it apply only to community associations in Northern Virginia. That prompted Del. Bobby Orrock, R-Caroline, to join the debate. Orrock said the policy should be uniform statewide and not apply just in Northern Virginia. He said that in some areas in his district, "they have strung clotheslines from tree to tree to tree." Orrock earned himself some groans by adding that if the bill passed, Northern Virginia homeowners would "start screaming, 'This looks like a West Virginia subdivision.'" Del. Mark Sickles, D-Fairfax, defended clotheslines--and the bill. "This is a bill about freedom the freedom to dry your clothes outside," Sickles said. "And a chance to be conservative and be green at the same time. "We pass a lot of bills about saving energy. A dryer in your house is the largest consumer of electricity." Nevertheless, delegates voted against air-dried sheets, defeating the bill 40-60. Chelyen Davis: 804/782-9362
Another great area to hide during 'kick the can' has been lost! Wait, they haven't come out with that on the Wii yet, have they? Next thing you know your kids will not be allowed to have playing cards clicking against the spokes of their bikes! Wait, they drive volvo's and BMW's now. Sorry. Really Sorry.
Get with the program. Of course I was being sarcastic! I wash my clothes on a rock down by the river, and wear them wet until they dry. Dryers use as much energy as your furnace. HOA's are funded by rich oil sheiks....and I really don't find hanging laundry offensive. But how do you get rid of that fresh air smell?
and tent cities?
yuck! How dare you call out West Virginia. There are other states that do the same thing. I am sick and tired of WV being singled out. As a resident of WV for most of my life, and proud of it!!, i am INSULTED, and I feel that is a DISCRIMINATING statement. I live in VA, and have done so for the past 19 yrs. I cannot believe that VA would let one of its Delegates make such a statement and actually be printed. BOBBY ORROCK, I FEEL YOU NOT ONLY OWE ME AN APPOLOGY BUT "ALL" RESIDENTS OF WV AN APPOLOGY.
Shame on Orrock ....thought he was a country boy at heart. Possibly he should help install a neater setup for his neighbors who string from tree to tree. Some people have no choice but to hang their clothes outside. If my clothesline has to go I will hang my laundry on the porch, I'm sure the neighbors would approve. Possibly they should spend more time looking at their own residence and property than worrying about what others are doing.
