High school roundup Date published: 2/28/2009
FROM STAFF REPORTS Greensville County built an early advantage and hung on for a 51-46 win over visiting James Monroe in last night's Region I, Division 4 girls basketball final. The Eagles used their edge in size under the basket to outrebound the Yellow Jackets while taking a 10-point halftime lead. In the third quarter JM's offense came around, but the defense was still lacking until the fourth quarter when it held the Eagles to one field goal and five free throws. "We got off to a slow start in the first," JM coach Julian Bumbrey said, "but we played a lot better in the second half." The Jackets are still alive and will face the Region II, Division 4 champion in next weekend's Group AA quarterfinals.
