Building permit numbers fall Date published: 3/12/2009 By Bill Freehling New-home demand continues to be slow Demand for residential construction continued to lag in February, according to data from the Fredericksburg Area Builders Association. There were 56 building permits issued in February for single-family detached houses in the Fredericksburg area. That includes the city and Caroline, King George, Orange, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties. Stafford had the most, with 23. That's down from 62 in January and 95 in February 2008. The tallies in February of 2007 and 2006 were 172 and 251, respectively. Building permits are considered a good indicator of future home construction. Demand has slowed due to a glut of existing homes on the market, unemployment and tough credit conditions. --Bill Freehling
