Regional transportation group starts to search for specific sites for more commuter parking Date published: 3/17/2009
By KELLY HANNON Work has begun on a study that will identify specific land parcels for 1,350 new commuter parking spaces in the Fredericksburg area. The spaces must be close to Interstate 95 and accessible by transit. The Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is overseeing the study, which will be done by consultant Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, based in Vienna, Va. Local governments in Fredericksburg have looked for ways to expand parking, with limited success. Private businesses adjacent to existing lots often decline to allow commuter parking, citing liability concerns. But a public-private partnership to build toll lanes on I-95 has infused the dilemma with potential funding. Two private companies, Fluor Inc. and Transurban USA, would pay for the new spaces if Virginia decides to pursue a project to build HOT lanes on I-95. The total of 3,000 spaces would include 1,050 in the North Stafford area and 300 in the Massaponax area. But FAMPO wants a greater role in the placement of the spaces, and it plans to look at five possible locations: Garrisonville Road, the Fredericksburg Virginia Railway Express station, at a planned I-95 interchange near the Fredericksburg rest area, near another potential interchange between the Massaponax and Thornburg exits, and near any future Spotsylvania VRE station. The cost of the study will not exceed $80,000. Results are expected in approximately six months. Kelly Hannon: 540/374-5436
