Readers share some of their most pressing pet peeves
From sexy little girl outfits to people who mistreat and tie up dogs, readers gripe on
Date published: 3/26/2009

By Rob Hedelt

TODAY'S column wraps up the complaints and pet peeves in my annual "Gripes & Grins" feature.

Grins to come in a week or so.

Lou Cubbage of Culpeper kicks things off with gripes centered around the way people mistreat animals.

The frequent respondent can't stand "people who abuse, neglect and tie their dogs."

A close second: "People who sell and give away puppies in front of department stores, without a care for who takes the animal or how its life will be."

Another Cubbage gripe: "Smokers who constantly toss their butts out an automobile window onto sidewalks and medians or in other spots. I've seen smokers entering a store just toss their cigarette over their shoulder, without a care where it lands or if it's still burning."

Ellen Noel of Fredericksburg had a list of traits and habits that irk her.

She's bugged by people who allow their dogs to relieve themselves on others' lawns, parents who have no control of their children in public places, youngsters who have no goals or aspirations, and gossips.

She also listed the No. 1 gripe this year: people who abuse handicapped spots.

One reader, who didn't want to provide his name, said there ought to be a special, mean sort of punishment for the "lazy bums" who use handicapped parking with no reason.

Margaret Thode of Locust Grove said her gripe came from a shopping outing for grandchildren. She was appalled by the racy clothes offered for young girls.

"The clothes made for girls in the size 7 to 14 range are unbelievably sexy in their look," said said. "You see padded bras, bikini underwear and clothes that look like Madonna designed them. Mothers should unite and refuse to buy them, sending a clear message to the clothing companies."

Pat Weber of Spotsylvania County wonders when people became so lazy that flipping on a turn signal became too much trouble.

"Or is it that the cell phone, the cigarette, the music system or the lipstick has become more important than letting other drivers know where these drivers are heading?" she wondered.

"Kathy Marcus of Spotsylvania, like many others this year and in years past, is tired of those who address a mix of men and women as "guys."" Wells ince society is all about demasculinating the male gender what is wrong with being called guys? You know what I am sick of? Women who want to be treated equally as guys but when they don't get their way pull the "but I'm a girl card." Or women who use their femininity to get what they want.

"She's also had it with "people who think they're special, who think the rules don't apply to them." Those would be politicians, athletes and celebrities. The rest of us are held to another, higher standard.

That’s not “always” true hpdomi, some shouldn’t be out there (posted by msdaisy , Mar. 26, 2009 5:59 am)    0 likes
Once while running rescue I was called to assist a police officer on 95. He’d pulled over an older gent doing 25 mph on the hwy and told me he seemed confused. I spoke w/ the man and sure enough, he’d just gone out for a “quick” run to the store and gotten lost. He’d been driving for 2 days and his home was in Philadelphia! We contacted his daughter who was frantic and had everyone out looking for him. She planned to take his keys as soon as she got him home. Folks, keep an eye on your elders!

Gee, Pat Weber. How about some compassion for the older folks on the road! I get frustrated with those that poke along, but they have just as much right to be out there as we do. It's also probably their last bit of freedom and independence. Compassion, please.
