Spring into action in great outdoors
Go climb a tree!

Date published: 3/27/2009

BY EDIE GROSS

Roughly 85 million years ago, early man climbed down from the trees—or so goes the theory of evolution.

For the last 4½ years, the folks at Riverside Outfitters have been trying to lure us back into them.

Using gear and techniques generally limited to professional arborists, the Richmond outdoor excursion company teaches the art of tree climbing.

Youngsters who show up for climbing camps or weekend sessions usually take to the trees within minutes, said Riverside Outfitters founder Scott Turner. But grown-ups sometimes find that their skills are a tad rusty.

“When you’re a kid, you love to climb. You think it’s the most natural thing to do,” said Turner, an arborist. “You gradually lose that instinct.”

Turner, who grew up in Richmond, worried that an entire generation of suburban children was losing touch with nature. The owner of Truetimber Tree Service, he launched Riverside Outfitters as a side project to address that gap.

The company offers tubing, kayaking, rafting and canoeing trips on the James River as well as mountain-bike rentals.

But a growing portion of the business has been its tree-climbing expeditions, which pick up in the spring.

The company often sets up its climbing gear in the James River Park. But Turner said that, if possible, he likes to find a tree close to the client’s home, preferably one that person might pass each day on the way to and from work.

That creates a bond between the climber and the tree, hopefully one that encourages the climber to look after it, he said.

Riverside Outfitters often goes to schools and shows the students how to scale the trees right on their own campuses.

It’s no small feat getting into the canopy of a tree. Climbers can dangle up to 65 feet in the air, and can then walk another 30 feet out onto a limb, said Matt Perry, the president of Riverside Outfitters and one of Turner’s partners.
