Many profit from unfair 'divorce industry'
Thank you for printing the March 29 op-ed by Stephen Baskerville about the divorce industry. If ever good intentions paved the way to hell, this is the case. This is a moneymaker for government, lawyers, social workers the list goes on and on, at the ultimate expense of children. Truly we have painted ourselves into a corner, and few see a way out. Being a judge really doesn't require a lot of work. The hours are regular and the pay is good considering how arduous (not!) the hours are. Granted a lawyer makes more, but they also spend more time researching (although I wish mine had done more) and sitting in court rooms waiting for their turn to argue (billing nonetheless). If being judge isn't a good deal then why do so many aspire to be judges?
As someone tried to explain previously, judges and social workers are paid a set salary every year. State judges are not well paid compared to others in the legal profession. They do not "profit" from hearing divorce cases. While lawyers charge fees, most have realistic expectations that most of their clients do not have deep pockets.
