Stafford High senior earns Eagle rank

Basil Fedun, a Scout with Troop 1717, worked to document and restore the Masonic Cemetery for his Eagle project.

Basil Fedun was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a Court of Honor March 7 at the University of Mary Washington. Basil is a charter member of Troop 1717, sponsored by Hartwood Presbyterian Church.

Basil earned 31 merit badges and has held a variety of leadership positions in the troop, including twice being selected as the Senior Patrol Leader. He also has been Assistant Senior Patrol Lead-er and Patrol Leader. He is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and a participant in the 2005 Jamboree.

For his Eagle community service project, Basil conducted an extensive recovery and documentation effort to restore the Masonic Cemetery in downtown Fredericksburg. The documentation included more than 200 photo-graphs and descriptions of the deteriorating tombstones to help preserve the cemetery's history.

Highlights of Basil's Scout-ing experiences include his time at the Claytor Lake Aquatics Base and completing the Boy Scouts of America Scuba Training.

Basil is an 18 year-old senior at Stafford High School. He played varsity lacrosse for four years and is president of the Young Republicans Club.

Basil will attend the University of Colorado in Boulder on an ROTC scholarship. He plans to study business or international relations, along with Russian and French. He plans to join the military.
