Tomorrow is the last chance to see the Rappahannock Area Blue Ribbon Coalition's pinwheel garden, planted in the front yard of the United Way building next to Shannon Airport.
The pinwheel is the new symbol of child-abuse prevention, adopted by Prevent Child Abuse America.
Junior Girl Scout Troop 541 helped the coalition plant the 1,500 pinwheels as part of their service project activities.
Each pinwheel represents 100 children, of the 125,000-plus children in our community served by 17 area nonprofits.
"In these difficult economic times, the work of area agencies that serve children becomes even more critical," said Julie Rivnak-McAdam, chairwoman of the coalition. "Financial stress often results in increased pressure on parents, which makes the job of being a positive parent even more difficult."
The Rappahannock Area Blue Ribbon Coalition is coordinated by the public education committee of the Rappahannock Area Council for Child Abuse Prevention. April is National Child Abuse Prevention month.
