WFLS News wins five Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters awards

WFLS News wins awards for stories

RICHMOND

--WFLS News captured five awards yesterday from the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters, including best documentary for a report on area soldiers serving in the Middle East.

"Focus: Report from Kuwait" was a collaborative effort by Free Lance-Star reporter Rusty Dennen and photographer Mike Morones, who were embedded with the troops from the Virginia National Guard's 116th Brigade Troops Battalion based in Fredericksburg. WFLS News reporter Deirdre Blake anchored and produced the program last March.

The news department also received the Superior Award for a Continuing News Story. "In the Line of Duty" was a series of reports by reporters Niche Herman and Bill Dubensky, following the shooting death of Fredericksburg Police Officer Todd Bahr.

The news staff was honored with awards for Outstanding Virginia News Operation, Best Web Site and Best Feature Story for Niche Herman's report, "On the Red Carpet," providing coverage of the premiere of the HBO mini series, "John Adams."
