Police Brief Date published: 4/21/2009 By Ellen Biltz Authorities look for driver in hit-and-run crash of car and bike A Stafford County man was severely injured early Saturday morning when he was hit by a car that left the scene after the crash. The 44-year-old man is still being treated at Mary Washington Hospital for several broken bones and other injuries, but is expected to live. The crash occurred around 5:55 a.m. in the southbound lane of Lafayette Boulevard just past the Fredericksburg line, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office. Scott said a witness on the scene was able to identify the offending car as a late '80s or early '90s model Honda sedan, tan in color. She said the witness saw the Honda swerving and speeding on State Route 3 and followed the car that later turned onto Lafayette Saturday morning. The witness further saw the car strike the bicyclist, causing the bike to fly into the air. When deputies responded, the victim was still unconscious, Scott said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office Crime Solvers at 540/582-5822. --Ellen Biltz
I'm reading it that the witness followed the Honda before the accident, and saw the accident, at which point the witness probably stopped to check on the bicyclist.
Often times, even in serious car/bike accidents, the driver is not always charged with anything. Just a very difficult case to prove. It's entirely possible that if the individual in this Honda had stopped, he/she wouldn't be facing any charges, unless drunk/high/no license, etc., however, by driving away they escalated the situation a great deal. Idiot. Maybe one of the many felons on the loose?
The witness seemingly followed the Honda for quite awhile, but never thought to get the license plate?
At the intersection there at the Greenwich Center, they could see the car as it passed thru at that time, and see a tag number.
People drive entirely too fast on Lafayette Blvd. It's an urban area, for petessake. Also, an addition of bike lanes should be something considered in the upcoming changes to Lafayette Blvd.
On another note, I hope they catch the tan Honda.
