Soccer players scrimmage at RFK

Soccer clubs scrimmage at RFK Stadium

Date published: 4/26/2009

Members of the Fredericksburg Soccer Club Inc. Phoenix U-12 travel boys soccer teams scrimmaged against each other during halftime of the D.C. United vs. New England Revolution game April 17 at RFK Stadium.

D.C. United holds halftime scrimmages at a few of its 15 home games each year.

Suzanne Smith and Kris Starosta, team managers, coordinated the logistics with Scott Miller of D.C. United. Players were in uniform prior to entering the stadium. At the 30-minute mark of the game, players were escorted to field level to watch the last 10 minutes of the first half. Shortly after the halftime whistle, mini-goals were set up and the scrimmage started.

Each team consisted of 11 players. The format of the scrimmage was 8v8 and lasted just under 12 minutes. In youth travel soccer in the U-12 age group, 8v8 is the standard format. It is more conducive to player development because it allows players to get more touches on the ball and is less complex than the 11v11 format.

Collin Marr scored the only goal of the match to give his scrimmage team a 1-0 win.

The D.C. United game was played before more than 14,000 fans, according to the game recap on the Major League Soccer web site.

The Fredericksburg Soccer Club is a youth travel soccer club established in 2009. The club currently has three teams and is committed to providing unique experiences and opportunities. The club will hold tryouts in May and June to expand the number of teams for the fall season.
