Susan Stimpson is pulling double duty this election season. Not only is she the chairwoman of the Stafford County Republican Committee, she is the GOP nominee for the Falmouth District seat on the Board of Supervisors.
"There are some things I need to follow through on before I step down as chairman," she said. "But I will step down as soon as the state convention is over."
That convention will take place May 29-30 in Richmond.
The 38-year-old Stimpson has lived in Stafford for almost five years with her husband and two children, a 12-year-old daughter and a 9-year-old son.
As the wife of a Marine, Stimpson has lived all over the country. When her husband was ready to retire, she suggested they return to the Fredericksburg area, a place the Mary Washington College graduate remembered fondly.
It didn't take her long to get to know her new home.
"I've always been very active in the community wherever I've lived," she said. "I've always gotten involved."
Being involved as a party organizer is one thing, but actually running for office is a new level of commitment. Stimpson decided to take the plunge after prodding from other county Republicans.
"It's not going to be an easy job, but the time commitment will be worth it," Stimpson said. "I care a great deal about the community, the schools and our taxes."
Stimpson feels that her experience in local politics will give her the necessary perspective to guide the board and the county in a positive direction.
"There's been a lack of leadership and vision," she said of the current board. "One thing I would like to see is a plan for Stafford's future and a plan for the immediate future."
As with fellow Republicans on the current board, Stimpson feels that implementing the Business, Professional and Occupational License Tax was a mistake.
"I'm most excited about the economy and jobs in Stafford," she said. "I want to roll back the anti-business posture this board has taken."
"I would repeal BPOL," she added. "Absolutely. Without a doubt."
