Preschoolers in Fredericksburg's Head Start program have been gearing up for Mother's Day this week.

In some classes, children have planted seeds to bring home to their moms. In others, they have decorated cards and made paintings.

Students from three classrooms for 4-year-olds also took some time earlier this week to share what they love most about their mothers.

Teacher Marcia Fortune gathered her students in a circle to talk about why their moms are special. Here are some of their responses:

"My mommy gives me toys," said Dominic Lucas.

"She gives me food," said Tayonna Robinson.

"She lets me go to the playground," said Antione Fox.

"My mommy gives me cookies," said Kesi Muhammad.

"She gives me gummies. She gives me a bath," said Serenity Turner.

"She gives me a hug," said Fainas Veriak, with a shy smile.

"She lets me go to her job," said Joshua Mattey.

"She lets me go outside and play with my baby sister," said Jefferson Gomez with a wide grin.

In Evelyn Delgado's class, the children were taking turns making pictures for their moms using paint and marbles.

Like the children in Fortune's class, most shared what they loved about their mom in a few words.

But Tiana Waines could not confine herself to a quick response. Tiana spent a few minutes sharing the reasons why she loves her mom. Here are just a few:

"She sometimes lets me buy things for myself, and then sometimes she lets me clean up my room."

"She lets me watch my favorite TV shows in her room." (Tiana's favorites? "The Incredibles" and "Arthur.")

"She lets me play with my toys."

"We play on the computer and sometimes we go to the library."

"I get to play tea party at my house with my friends."

"She lets me do her hair. She does my hair, too."

"She takes me outside, and I play with my favorite friends."

There were more, but it was Tiana's turn to make a picture.

In Chloe Ferogh's class, the children were decorating flower-basket-shaped cards with sequins and heart-shaped stickers for their mothers.

Destini Williams paused in the midst of creating to explain that her whole family is special.

"I love my mommy and my brother and my sister," she said. "We play toys."

"I love her because she does fun things with me. She takes me places," said table mate Gianni Russell of his mom. "Last year, she took me to Chuck E. Cheese."

Gianni also likes to tell his mom jokes. She laughs at them.

Others in Ferogh's class expressed appreciation for their mothers' culinary skills:

"She bakes me a cake," said Kanaysha Baize.

"She cooks rice," said Raoul Mukiza.

After about 15 minutes, the children had finished their creations. They were to bring them home later in the week, along with flower seeds they'd planted in plastic foam cups, simple gifts that will make their mothers' day.
