Boy, grandmother mauled by pit bulls
Date published: 5/14/2009
BY DONNIE JOHNSTON The 3-year-old boy who was attacked by two pit bulls yesterday is recovering, according to Culpeper County Animal Control Director Jamie Bennett. “He is still in the hospital and underwent plastic surgery,” Bennett said today. The child, who was attacked while riding his tricycle on Mount Pony Road, suffered bites to his face, scalp and arms, authorities said. He is reportedly still undergoing tests, Bennett said. His 47-year-old grandmother, Mrs. Keith Powers, who was with him on a daily walk at the time, was released last night from the University of Virginia Medical Center, where both were airlifted, Bennett said. The Animal Control director added that the owner of the two male pit bulls still has not been determined. Although there are no state statutes dealing with such attacks, Bennett said that the owners would still face local charges because the dogs had no tags or collars and they were running free in a leash-law area. The dogs remain isolated at the animal shelter and will be euthanized if no one comes forward to claim them. Donnie Johnston: djohnston@freelancestar.com
Awesome suggestion. Has the FLS requested these photos to assist in this case? If not, there is absoloutely NO reason not to. Please expedite so the community can make sure these owners are punished. Otherwise, just killing the dogs is not a solution that will prevent these people from having more. Neither will it protect the public against future attacks by these owner's other animals.
Maybe readers would recognize the dogs, so the owner can be arrested. The plastic surgery is very expensive, and the owners of pit bulls usually have the extra-costly homeowners insurance, which would pay for the medical bills. The dogs' pictures should be circulated around Culpeper, before they are euthanized.
