Fredericksburg police were looking last night for a man accused of firing two shots into a vehicle that was fleeing from an angry mob late Tuesday.
The shots shattered the rear windshield and grazed the face of the 24-year-old driver, city police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said.
The woman was treated at Mary Washington Hospital for injuries to her face. It is not clear what triggered the incident.
Randy Dewahn Anderson, 21, of Port Royal is charged with aggravated malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied vehicle, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and possessing a firearm as a felon.
Bledsoe said he is considered to be armed and dangerous. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call city police at 373-3122.
According to Bledsoe, the incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Dixon Street.
The victim, her sister and another young woman were returning to a home when their vehicle was surrounded by a group of about 30 men and women.
Bledsoe said people in the crowd were yelling at the three women and demanding that they get out of the vehicle.
They were also pounding on the car and trying to get inside, Bledsoe said. A man struck the driver's sister in the head during the altercation.
The mother of one of the women witnessed the commotion and called 911 about the same time the driver sped away from the volatile scene.
After the shots were fired, the driver went to a nearby 7-Eleven and someone there called 911. She was then taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
Bledsoe said police interviewed numerous people and still aren't sure what led to the ruckus. Most of those involved knew each other, she said.
Anderson, who police said frequents Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County, was later identified as the shooter.
Bledsoe said police stopped a vehicle that Anderson is believed to have left the scene in, but he was not in the car. Three other people were, however, and one of them, 25-year-old Latisha McCowan of Manassas, was arrested on a possession of cocaine charge.
