Culpeper treasurer is former county staffer
Town of Culpeper taps former county official as treasurer

BY DONNIE JOHNSTON

A former Culpeper County finance director has been named the town of Culpeper's new treasurer.

On July 7, Ron Mabry will assume the post left vacant when Neal Deane resigned last August.

Mabry, a Front Royal native, was Culpeper County's finance director from 1988-97. He had previously been Warren County's assistant county administrator.

Mabry, 57, was chosen from a pool of about 30 applicants. Town Manager Jeff Muzzy called the final selection an "easy" one.

"Ron possesses the necessary government experience, education and skills to be successful in this position," he said.

The new treasurer's starting pay will be $90,000 a year.

After leaving Culpeper County, Mabry started his own business management service in Front Royal and is now serving part time as Fauquier County's special projects manager.

Mabry said he applied for the treasurer's job because he likes government service and enjoys "making budgets work in the real world."

Before he was named treasurer Tuesday night, the Town Council had hired Mabry on a part-time basis to help with its fiscal 2010 budget, which is now in the making.

"I like the challenge, putting a budget together," the veteran finance director said. "I enjoy working with people and I enjoy challenges."

Mabry and his wife, Sandi, have been married for 29 years and have one grown son. They live in Front Royal.
