Caroline approves two new funeral homes
Caroline board approves new funeral homes in Ladysmith area

Competition is getting steeper in the funeral business in Caroline County.

The Board of Supervisors last week approved rezoning requests to allow two new funeral homes in Ladysmith.

Ladysmith Funeral Home will be on 4 acres off U.S. 1 between Rylands and Gatewood roads. Owner M.E. Hicks said in his application that there will also be an office park built as an "investment" and "positive element" for the county.

David Storke, Bowling Green mayor and owner of Storke Funeral Home, is expanding his business with The Ladysmith Chapel.

That facility also will be on U.S. 1, near Ladysmith Road. Storke said the chapel will fit in with the village look of the area and won't stand out as a funeral home.

Storke said he isn't bothered by another new funeral home a few miles away.

"Competition is good," he said. "I welcome them and wish them luck."

A retail and office park also are planned with Storke's project. Contractor and Caroline resident William Beach said Friday that the area may be called Ladysmith Square.

In other action last week, county supervisors voted to expand the wastewater-treatment plant to handle 1.5 million gallons a day, or 2,900 more homes. The system now handles 500,000 gallons a day and is only 233 homes away from reaching its maximum capacity.

The expansion will cost the county nearly $19.5 million over the next 30 years. Without the expansion, the county faced up to $4.6 million in upgrades just to meet state regulations.

Public Utilities Superintendent Joseph Schiebel said the project should take 2 years to complete.

Supervisor Jeff Sili opposed the project due to costs.

"Will we have the kind of growth to support that?" Sili asked. "It's a huge debt. With the economic situation we are in now, I don't know if I can make a commitment to that kind of debt."

The board will continue discussion of the proposed fiscal 2010 budget May 26.
