CELEBRATE STRAWBERRY SEASON
Northern Neck town of Heathsville holds strawberry festival
Date published: 5/21/2009

It's strawberry season in Virginia. How do I know this? Well, besides seeing them at the farmers market, I am dealing with wild ones creeping into my herb garden.

And, of course, there are the strawberry festivals being held around the state celebrating the most widely cultivated small fruit in the country.

This weekend the Northern Neck town of Heathsville will be holding its own gathering honoring the strawberry.

The Heathsville Strawberry Festival features 120 vendors, including artists and craftsmen. Local musicians, including a children's church choir, will provide entertainment.

Of course, the main attraction will be the strawberry. And fresh ones at that.

Event co-chair Jan Beckett boasted that "the strawberries at the festival are locally grown, and picked the day before."

Organizers of this event anticipate between 2,000 to 3,000 attendees will be sampling strawberry treats, including the event's famous strawberry shortcake.

Pets are welcome.
