Once again, the Battlefield District and Region I of the Virginia High School League are indebted to the people of the University of Mary Washington.
Date published: 6/14/2009 Once again, the Battlefield District and Region I of the Virginia High School League are indebted to the people of the University of Mary Washington. Over the past few weeks, tennis players from Fredericksburg to South Hill have had the pleasure of playing in the best tennis facility in the state for the Battlefield District Titles and the Region I titles. The University Tennis Center, with the help of Don Paitrick, opened its doors to the young players for several rainy days, and the tournament did not miss a beat. James Monroe High School played its team regional matches on the outdoor courts. Thanks to both the men's coach, Todd Hebling, and women's coaches, Patrick Catullo and Art Canizares, for allowing the use of the facilities while practicing for the NCAA national tourney. The local student athletes benefited from "home court" advantage. Caleb Rapkins, of James Monroe High School, has advanced to the VHSL state tournaments. The comments and praises for the facilities and the staff of the tennis center were in abundance. Ed Hegmann and Susan Knick were instrumental in planning and opening the facilities for the tournament's use and were of great help to the directors. We thank UMW and its staff for a chance to showcase their facilities and people. We look forward to a continued partnership with them.
