A man already wanted by two law enforcement agencies added a third to the list Tuesday night, police said.

Natatia Bledsoe, Fredericksburg police spokeswom-an, said the suspect fled from a traffic stop, damaged a fence and escaped by running through backyards after abandoning his vehicle.

A man claiming to be the suspect, 27-year-old Adam Luther Brown, called city police yesterday and reported that his car had been stolen. Police suggested that he make the report in person; Brown had not heeded that suggestion as of last night.

According to Bledsoe, Officer Gary Harvey was in the 200 block of Jefferson Davis Highway about 9 p.m. Tuesday when he tried to stop a speeding vehicle.

The driver refused to stop, and Harvey followed the 1997 BMW onto Princess Anne Street, where the driver ran a red light at Germania Street and made an abrupt turn onto Hunter Street.

Bledsoe said several pedestrians who were crossing Hunter Street had to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

The driver bailed out of the vehicle and ran, with the officer in pursuit. The suspect scaled fences and eventually lost the officer.

Meanwhile, the vehicle-- which had been left in gear-- rolled into a fence at 306 Hunter St., badly damaging the fence.

A police dog tracked the suspect to the parking lot of the Colonial Motel, where the trail was lost.

However, Brown's identification was found in the BMW, along with a small amount of marijuana.

Brown was charged with felony eluding, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, disregarding a traffic light and hit and run.

Bledsoe said he is also wanted in Spotsylvania for failing to appear in court and by the Virginia State Police for failing to register as a sex offender.

Brown was convicted in May 2003 of carnal knowledge with a teenage girl in Spotsylvania, court records show.
