Peyton Bartlett received an Honorable Mention in the 2009 National EMS Week Children's Art Contest sponsored by the Rappahannock EMS Council and participating agencies.

All students who completed the 2008-2009 year are invited to participate in the summer reading-incentive program: Explore the World--Open a Book. Call the school to reserve your spot for the reward pizza parties on July 16 and 30.

Kindergarten Summer Kickoff sessions are Aug. 13 at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call or drop by the school to sign up.

The Back-to-School Block Party at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre is Aug. 9, 4-8 p.m. Tickets cost $10 per family. There will be special shopping discounts and hours, performances, a parade and raffles. Proceeds benefit the PTO and the Spotsylvania Education Foundation. Ni River Middle

The music department had a successful day at Kings Dominion May 30. Concert band placed first in the middle school/junior high school division with a superior rating. Other awards included Outstanding Percussion and the Sweepstakes Award for the highest score of all of the performing ensembles in its division. They also won the Grand Sweepstakes Award for the ensemble with the highest score of all over five weeks of festivals.

The choir earned a superior rating, winning its division, and had an Outstanding Soloist Award as well. Orchestra earned a superior rating and also won its division.

Massaponax High

Six students attended the DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif. The students attending were senior Blair Bolen; juniors Jita Benani, Matt Kelly, Jaclyn Rowe, Scott Tarut; and sophomore Logan Saunders. The six students competed at the Virginia DECA State Leadership Conference in March and had placed in the top of their competitive event which earned them a spot to the National Competition. Senior Blair Bolen finished in the Top 20 for his competitive event at the national level.
