Ex-supervisor Mark Osborn will run to win his Falmouth seat back Date published: 7/7/2009
BY JONAS BEALS Two familiar faces are trying to regain the seats they once held on the Stafford Board of Supervisors. One is Gary Snellings in the Hartwood district. The other is Mark Osborn in Falmouth. Osborn, who is running with the slogan "experience matters," was the Falmouth supervisor from 2000 to 2004. At the time, he represented the Republican Party. This time, he is running as an Independent. He will face Republican Susan Stimpson and Democrat Doug Filler in November's election. "I'm a little disappointed with the partisan bickering on the board," he said. "I believe we need to go beyond parties and start work-ing for the citizens. I am the same candidate, the same person. I'm just not tied to a party." Osborn pointed to many of the successes of the past four years as projects that were initiated or supported during his time on the board. He specifically mentioned the comprehensive plan rewrite, new fire and rescue stations and the England Run Library. On the other hand, he would like to see more money allocated to schools, and feels that he could do more to foster communication between supervisors and the School Board. Most candidates expect the business, professional and occupational license tax to be a key issue this year, and Osborn is no exception. He owns Colonial Circuits, a local business off U.S. 17. While it is a manufacturing concern and not subject to the BPOL tax, he still questions the wisdom of implementing the tax, as have Republicans on the current board. "I feel for the business community," he said. "We don't need added taxation at this time." He still considers himself a Republican when it comes to state and national politics. "I refuse to walk the walk here locally," he said. "People deserve better and if they elect me, they're going to get better." Jonas Beals: 540/368-5036
