Former Colonial Beach High School basketball star T.T. Carey gave an oral commitment to La Salle University last night.

Carey committed to the Philadelphia school one week after taking an official visit there. Carey will receive a full scholarship from the Explorers, who compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

"The players, the coaches, everything was nice up there," Carey said of La Salle.

Carey led Colonial Beach to the Group A, Division 1 state championship this past season. He scored 884 points, the third-highest single season total in Virginia High School League history.

"T.T. will definitely be a very successful person and player at the next level," Colonial Beach head coach Steve Swope said. "All of us from our town wish him nothing but the best. He's carrying the torch for us."

Carey, a 6-foot-4 guard, finished his career with 2,481 points. This past season, he averaged 29.5 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. He was named The Free Lance-Star co-player of the year.

This past year, he was also named the Virginia High School Coaches Association Division 1 player of the year and the Associated Press Group A player of the year. Carey said he expects to sign a national letter of intent with La Salle after he finishes a summer school English course at the end of the month.
