Gunnery Sgt. David S. Spicer

Marine Gunnery Sgt. David Shane Spicer of Montross died Monday, July 13, 2009, outside Delhi, Afghanistan, while conducting combat operations against enemy forces.

He proudly and honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as an explosive ordnance disposal technician. He had joined the Marines in 1994, upon graduation from high school in Ohio.

David was born Oct. 13, 1975, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Sandra and Gary Lockwood. On July 23, 2005, he married Katrina A. Thompson, who survives him. They made their home in Montross.

He was stationed for a number of years at Indian Head, Md., with CBIRF and continued his service with the Second EOD Company aboard Camp Lejune, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, David Shane Spicer II, on July 18, 2008.

In addition to his loving parents and devoted wife, he is survived by his beloved daughter, Abigail; his soon-to-be-born son, Chance; and his mother-in-law, Linda Armstrong, who resides with the family. He also leaves behind his three brothers; one sister; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, most of whom reside in Ohio.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

Burial will take place with full military honors at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 23, in Arlington National Cemetery.
