A young political upstart vies for the Garrisonville supervisor seat in Stafford Date published: 7/21/2009
BY JONAS BEALS Laura Sellers is single, 24 years old and lives with her parents. Not unusual information, but not something you usually see on the resume of a candidate for the Stafford County Board of Supervisors. Sellers is the Democratic nominee, facing incumbent Mark Dudenhefer for the Garrisonville seat in November. "Stafford needs a new political face," she said. "I want to give the youth--high school students and people my age--a voice in Stafford." "I want to live at home," she added. "I don't have to live at home." Sellers has had political ambitions since middle school, but this is her first foray into public life. A North Stafford High School graduate, she is particularly interested in improving education in the county. She decided it was time to get involved when she learned that one of her favorite teachers was considering a move to Spotsylvania for better pay. "To hear that teachers are being taken advantage of--that impacted me," Sellers said. "Their profession needs to be respected." Sellers is a North Carolina State University graduate with a degree in sociology. She parlayed that into a job as a researcher for the Department of Defense. In her spare time, she is pursuing a master's in social work and a doctorate in sociology. She claims a systematic, research-based approach to her campaign, and believes her studying has made her familiar with the history of political issues in Stafford. Although she announced her campaign only days before the filing deadline, she said she has been preparing to run since February. "I am making sure that I'm doing this the right way," Sellers said. "I'm always willing to listen and ask questions. I'm not some kid who has nothing better to do." Jonas Beals: 540/368-5036
, I am pleased to see someone such as Laura Sellers take an active interest in trying to make a positive change for us all, especially when most people her age have little or no interest in political issues. She is an educated, intelligent, and very capable woman. I think it shows forethought to save money living at home, while furthering one's education. And choosing to live with and help loving parents is a positive attribute,
I think Mrs. Sellers wants to be Supervisor and does not want to face failure if she loses and is running vicariously through her daughter. I believe Mrs. Sellers is the one with the agenda.
Laura Seller represents a generation who will inherit the
fruits of the decisions, good or bad, made by today's
politicians. It is important that this generation be
represented in the decision making process, and Laura
Sellers has the education, temperament, intellect and
common sense necessary to do the job. Her decision to live
in her parents' home while saving for a home of her own is
wise financial planning. We could use a little more of that on
the Stafford BoS.
Laura Sellers has a Top Security Clearance and she currently works as a member of the Defense Intelligence Agency's Behavioral Sciences Division. The military saw her as qualified for this important jpb assessing national security threats, so clearly she is qualified to be a member of the Stafford Board of Supervisors and make critical decisions concerning our county.
The Generation X young woman needs to get her priorities straight. First, move out of your parents house. That would show that you have the capability to make decisions on your own and can live on your own without the assistance of others. Then worry about running for public office. If she attempted to represent my district, I wouldn't vote for her. Unfortunately, she may still get elected and affect me even though I live in another part of the county.
